The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon, is one of five regional commissions under the administrative direction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA promotes economic and social development of Western Asia through regional and subregional cooperation and integration. It devises, promotes, and executes development assistance activities and projects in tune with the needs and priorities of the region of Western Asia.
After the experience with UNECA, sixeleven has been asked to redesign the website of another of the five regional commissions of the United Nations: the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon.
This has been an exciting project that improved our skills in the multi languages website architecture and increase the experience with the right-to-left design challenges, due to the Arabic language. Among the website features, sixeleven developed a tool to let the website administrator easily create sub-sites for events or projects and delegate the content management to specific users for every sub-site. A quite complex editorial worklfow has been put in place to split the website sections editorial ownership to different teams.
The assignment included design, user experience, as well as front-end and back-end development. sixeleven lead UX research and study to identify a proper information architecture of the website, designed the new look & feel and developed the new fully responsive platform basing it upon the open source CMS Drupal.
The new ESCWA website has been deployed to a dedicated environment in the UN headquarters datacenter in New York and is reachable at this URL: www.unescwa.org
